(1.) Eapen BR. A new insight into the pathogenesis of Reiter's syndrome using bioinformatics tools.International Journal of Dermatology March-2003. 42 (3); 242-243. [Pubmed Citation]

Blast search of HLA B27 against prokaryotes genomic database did not show any significant similarity to bacteria implicated in Reiter's. However a contiguous gene LY95 on 6p21-31, a surface receptor involved in natural killer cell triggering showed homology with samonella enteritica serovar typhi. Is Reiter's syndrome a result of bacterial molecular mimicry with LY95? Click on the links for more information.

M.Leprae genome was analysed and compared to M.tuberculosis genome to seek explanations for the unique features of M.Leprae. The protein implicated in M.leprae's nerve predilection (Alpha 2 Laminin) is shared by many mycobacteria [Click Here]. No human nerve protein homologues were found [Click Here]. 18KDa cytoplasmic antigen of M.Leprae showed little similarity to other mycobacterial proteins [Click Here]. A possible  'horizontal gene transfer' was also demonstrated [Click Here].

Bacterial superantigens are implicated in various inflammatory & non-inflammatory diseases. The conformational change probably responsible for loss of function following a point mutation in staphylococcal enterotoxin G is predicted using protein structure prediction software.

VIT1, the recently discovered gene in vitiligo codes for a protein which has a ubiquitin like N-recognin domain. This can explain many of the characteristics of vitiligo like its heritability, aggravation with stress, non-inflammatory melanocytic apoptosis and response to steroids. Valuable clues as to probable treatment options can also be obtained. [Full Text] [Pubmed]
