VIRTUAL DERMATOLOGIST A Diagnostic Application For Dermatology [Dr. Maged KB briefly mentions this application in his letter to IJDVL] This programme is a result of my experiments with expert systems in medical diagnosis. This system was first programmed by me in Prolog in the late nineties. I have re-written the algorithm in Java servlet for web use, but it is not as versatile as its predecessor. Though this program was conceptualized and implemented before the concept of ontology became popular, the logic is based on a triplet of subject, object and predicates. However the predicate is a constant term (something like is_found_in with a relative confidence factor associated with it.). There is a synonym file defining the Equivalent 'Restriction' and a rule file defining 'Disjoints' and other rules, a 'reasoner' would have figured out!
I have concentrated more on the programme and less on database. In fact I
prepared the database in 10 days time! So don't gauge the programme by its
accuracy. This is just a technology demonstrator now (and may remain so in
the future). As the medical knowledge processing and analysis rely on
Ontologies now, I plan to redesign this application based on my
ONTODerm ontology.
I have decided to prepare this for dermatology because it is my
speciality. But the idea can be used for other specialities also. Please click here,
